CNN Hero of the Year: Anuradha Koirala


Anuradha Koirala whose group has rescued more than 12,000 women and girls from sex slavery in Nepal and India has been named the 2010 CNN Hero of the Year.


Through her organization Maiti Nepal Koirala has freed girls enslaved, tortured, and raped for profit and given them shelter.
Maiti Nepal also provides education and teaches useful skills for rescued girls and young women and some who are contracted HIV/AIDS and spent their days  in comfort and love.
Anuradha Koirala was chosen by the public in an online poll that ran for eight weeks on CNN.com. Koirala will receive $100,000 to further her efforts.
Koirala who was honored in front of some 5,000 audience members at a galahttp://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gif event said:

Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity. I ask everyone to join me to create a society free of trafficking. We need to do this for all our daughters.
